Basketball in the High Plains area, and especially women’s basketball, has a storied history. For more than seven decades that history has been alive and thriving at Wayland Baptist University. Since 2012 the Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation, Inc. has assisted the Flying Queens program with financial support, and this golf tournament is a major part of our annual fundraising effort.

Your support will play a significant role in keeping this iconic women’s college basketball program nationally competitive.

This year’s golf tournament honors the memory of Coach Dean Weese. Weese was a legendary coach in the High Plains and Panhandle of Texas who passed October 28, 2023 at the age of 88.

During his 42-year career, Weese’s record of 1,207-197 included six seasons as coach of the Flying Queens, amassing a193-30 mark with five appearances in the national AIAW tournament and two AAU titles.

Before his stint at Wayland, Weese spent 15 years at Spearman where his teams made eight appearances at the state tournament, winning three championships (1966, 1971,1972). After Wayland, Weese spent 19 years at Levelland where his teams won more than 550 games and seven state championships.

Weese was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, Texas High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, and Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame. He was selected as the 2000 National Girls’ Sport Coach of the Year by the National Federation Coaches Association.
